Jeremy Herve . @jeremy,

Fellow dog owners, I need your help. My dog won't eat his flea/tick meds (Bravecto chews, some rather big pills if you're not familiar).

I feel like I've tried everything: I tried wrapping them in peanut butter, cheese, tuna, blue cheese. I've tried cutting them down into smaller pieces that he can wolf down.

Whatever I do, he always either smell it or feel it as soon as he starts chewing, and spits it back. It always ends up with me forcing it down his throat and waiting long enough for him to swallow it for good.

Do you have any tricks?

Here is the grumpy rascal, his name is Watson. He's almost 11, but still hasn't learned that pills are good for him.

@[email protected] I also had this problem. We now effectively grind up the meds into a powder, mix it into peanut butter and yogurt, and then mix that into her dog food. She's food motivated enough that she won't skip a meal tho.

Jeremy Herve . @jeremy,

@daniel I may try that, thank you! I'll have to find something with a strong enough taste to hide the smell of the meds though, I'm not sure peanut butter will be enough :)

Jeremy Herve . @jeremy,

@luciedigitalni That's a good point, I could try different meds. Although I must say that at this point I'm a bit weary of trying different meds. I know he digests Bravecto well, at least, I'm happy with that :)

@jeremy 🤣... it's a problem for sure with many companions I've had over the years. Both of my babies will only take them disguised in there favourite flavour (sardine) but have to be ground to almost a powder and mixed in. I've yet to see one swallow or chew the pills alone with relish. I'm not even sure if the medication is as effective given this way but better than none at all? 🤷‍♂️

@jeremy That reminds me that Diego needs the same. I crush those tablets between two spoons and feed it to him, mixed in with soft dog food. It usually takes two or three lumps of dog food. Good luck!

Jeremy Herve . @jeremy,

@DavidNielsen That's how it always ends up, yeah. I was hoping to find some way for him to want to eat it. He eats everything, everything but those meds! :)

@jeremy that is the way our vet taught me to get our Golden to take her pills, arguing that it was quick, easy and secure. There is no reason to complicate things or annoying the dog, all you risk is the dog not getting the full dose or some such problem. He can’t be taught to eat something he hates, that is not in the cards, especially not given his age. Just be kind to him, help him take his meds and give him his favorite treat afterwards, then he will learn to not hate the experience and coop

@jeremy The only thing I can contribute to this (probs not that helpful, I know) is that when my young tom-cat needed pills, I would wear my motor-cycle gauntlets, and do the 'force the mouth open, put the pill in, and hold on' thing. Sometimes I won, but not often. The little fecker survived of course, because cats!

Jeremy Herve . @jeremy,

@bytebro I always end up having to force it down his throat, yeah. It's not a great feeling, but it works. Some folks have suggested grinding the meds to a powder, I may try that next time.

@jeremy Tried that. If I buried the pill in the food, he'd eat all of the food very carefully around the pill. If I ground it up, he'd go snarf food from the neighbours cats!

@jeremy I've had to resort to placing pills so far back in their throat that they can only swallow.

I've read about someone putting a pill in peanut butter and sticking to the roof of the mouth...

Good luck. It's always easier when the doggo is a gulper, as it's easier to stick in a hot dog, toss, and it get's gulped.

Jeremy Herve . @jeremy,

@CStamp He is a gulper, and he eats literally everything. In fact he is most quick to gulp down what he shouldn't be eating! :) Well, everything but those meds. He is as stubborn as I am I suppose, I'm only getting what I deserve :)
I'll try grinding the pill to powder and mixing it into something smelly next time ; others have suggested it may work. 🤞

Jeremy Herve . @jeremy,

@sabrinadent I always end up having to shove it down his throat, which I don't really like, but I never thought about butter.
Others have suggested grinding the pill to a powder and mixing it with something smelly, I think I'll try that next. If that fails, I'll try your method. Thank you!

@jeremy So the butter is a lubricant and makes it faster and easier and as a bonus, ours was not a Nobel Laureate so while nobody likes having a pill shoved down their throat, he could IMMEDIATELY lick the remaining butter sludge off my fingers and all was forgiven with zero trauma because BUTTER.
